Patients with diabetes have an increased fracture risk despite normal or even high bone mineral density. Collagen cross-links resulting from non-enzymatic glycation have been shown to reduce the toughness of the bone tissue and may play a role in diabetic bone strength. This project combines micro-CT and optical imaging approaches to study the contributions of bone mineral density, microstructure and non-enzymatic glycation to overall bone mechanics in a rat model of diabetes.
